Kitchen cabinet painting in Miami: process, timing and durability
How professional cabinet refinishing actually works in Miami — degreasing, sanding, sprayed coatings, cure times and how long a sprayed finish really lasts.

Refinishing cabinets costs a fraction of replacing them and, done properly, is indistinguishable from a factory finish. Done improperly, it chips at the drawer edges within a year. The entire difference is in preparation and the coating system.
The process, step by step
- 01Label and remove every door, drawer front and piece of hardware.
- 02Degrease thoroughly. Kitchen cabinets carry an invisible film of cooking oil; nothing bonds to it.
- 03Sand to a uniform dull profile and dust off with tack cloth and vacuum.
- 04Fill grain, dents or old hardware holes where a smooth finish is required.
- 05Spray a bonding primer — this is the step that decides adhesion on laminate, thermofoil and factory-lacquered doors.
- 06Spray two coats of a hard, self-levelling cabinet enamel, sanding lightly between coats.
- 07Cure doors flat on racks in a controlled area, not hung in the kitchen.
- 08Mask, prime and spray the boxes in place with full containment and negative air.
- 09Reinstall after cure and adjust every hinge.
Timing you should expect
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| Removal, degrease and sanding | 1 – 2 days |
| Priming and coats (doors and boxes) | 2 – 3 days |
| Initial cure before reinstallation | 2 – 3 days |
| Full cure before heavy use | 14 – 21 days |
That last line matters. The finish is dry to the touch in hours but reaches full hardness over two to three weeks. During that window, close doors gently, avoid stacking heavy items against faces, and clean only with a damp cloth.
How long it lasts
A properly sprayed cabinet finish with a quality waterborne enamel holds up for eight to twelve years in a family kitchen. High-touch edges around the sink and trash pull-out will show wear first, and those can be touched up without redoing the kitchen.
Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?
Yes, with the correct bonding primer and if the surface is intact. Peeling thermofoil must be repaired or replaced first.
Brushed or sprayed?
Sprayed. Brush and roller leave texture on the one surface in the home people look at from six inches away.
Can we use the kitchen during the work?
Partially. Expect the sink and counters to be available most evenings, but plan for the doors to be off for roughly a week.
